    Plant Care Tips

In most climates these crops can be direct seeded in the garden after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to 70-90 F. Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep depending on size. The larger the seed, the deeper you want to plant. We plant our seeds in three foot wide beds and like to space squash about 18-24 inches apart. The larger the spacing the bigger your potential plant may grow.

If you want to get a jump on the season or your season is short, start these seeds in the greenhouse, under lights or outdoors. Beware, they grow quickly and you only need to start them 2-3 weeks before your transplant date. Allow winter squash to stay on vines as long as possible then store in a cool dry location for winter eating. Winter squash is ready for storage when your fingernail cannot easily puncture the rind. Summer squash should be picked small and often to encourage the plant to continue to produce fruits.

Squash plants are heavy feeders meaning they love well amended beds with plenty of nitrogen and compost.

    What Our Customers Are Saying

“Redwood Seeds is always my first choice, go to seed company, not only because I don’t want to support big agribusiness through my seed buying, but because their varieties are thoroughly superior, in climate resiliency, taste, and output. Their seed is among the many reasons I home grow…you just can’t get most of their heirlooms from the store.  I may not be monetarily rich- but I eat like a queen thanks to Redwood!

"Just wanted to thank you for your super wonderful lettuce seeds that have produced an incredible crop in our Arizona winter garden! Jericho is a definite favorite, but the Concept & Drunken Woman are running very close behind!! They're all so perfect for our wraps & salads. Neighbors just can't believe it!"

    Susan, Verified Customer

"Hi we had great success with the Chinese red beans from your seeds this year! Super prolific, fast growing, high yield. Very fun to watch growing from our over head trellis and made it easy to pick all the beans! Will grow again next summer and increase the amount I plant!"

"I really enjoy your seeds. As a Small Humboldt County California Farmer, I love being able to get seeds from nearby. All of the varieties I have purchased have produced very well. I get high quality, viable, well cared for seeds. I like that the selection is somewhat limited and straightforward. It makes it easy to choose and I know it will be a strong yummy plant."

"Year after year, I have been pleased with the quality seeds I receive from Redwood Seeds. I've had consistently excellent germination rates, discovered heat-tolerant varieties that are vital for the Sacramento Valley summers, and I love that they are open-pollinated so that I can save some seed for next year. I am always recommending Redwood Seeds to friends, and encourage novice gardeners to sign-up for Kalan's helpful gardening emails."
